DVD Review: Jubilee Christmas

Categories: DVDs,The Latest

jubch_dvdOn December 9, 2012 I attended one of the very first Christmas concerts by the Jubilee Gang.  It was an amazing night!  The camera crew came in to film the evening so it could be released on DVD.  Unfortunately, that particular taping never made it on DVD due to issues with the film, but when the 2013 Christmas Tour began they taped a new concert at the Trinity Broadcasting Network in Nashville.  After watching this DVD for the very first time I’m happy to announce, it was well worth the wait!

The Jubilee Gang as a group is Legacy Five, Greater Vision and the Booth Brothers.  One quartet, two trios and eleven people in all.  In 2009 these three groups recorded their first CD together and called it “Jubilee.”  Since then, they have gone on to record five projects and have appeared in numerous venues together across the nation, Jubilee Christmas marks their fourth DVD release.  According to Gerald Wolfe, a collective tour such as the Jubilee Christmas Tour has never been done before in Southern Gospel Music, so a program like this is rare in the genre.  With select dates on the tour schedule, getting a ticket to one of these concerts can be tricky depending on if the tour comes to your home state, but now this Christmas program is available to everyone, any time of the year, through this brand new DVD!

Highlights:  With two hours of singing and comedy you can only imagine the moments a video like this can capture!  Some of my personal favorites were the “snow ball fight,” (fans of Howie’s Redneck Snow blower will appreciate that scene!)  When Scott Fowler clipped on his “ugly (and might I say, oversized) next tie” during the Twelve Days of Christmas and also Rodney Griffin picking up and shaking the presents under the tree when Ronnie Booth was singing The Christmas Song.  There was a lot of joking and fun in the program and most of the serious points on what Christmas is really about came in towards the end.  With that in mind, my favorite moment from these thoughtful scenes was when Ronnie sat in a big, Victorian looking overstuffed chair and read Luke two.

Conclusion:  I give this DVD a five star rating for a few reasons.  First of all, the stage was gorgeous!  TBN knows how to decorate for Christmas!  We all know that in order for something to sell well, it has to look good, and the stage certainly qualified!  Secondly, the quality of video was superb – I loved all the different camera angles.  This is much improved from the last DVD (Jubilee 3) that the Jubilee Gang released.  One thing I thought strange was that the grand piano had no lid!  I’m sure there was a special reason for this, but it did look a little odd.  In closing, this video was perfect.  There was a good variety of fast Christmas songs and slower carols, I would have liked to have seen more big ballads like O Holy Night, but the selection gave the DVD a feel of a laid back, warm, traditional Christmas that didn’t need big arrangements to keep it going.  With the newer Christmas songs and the mellow carols, it was a concert to sit back, relax and enjoy!

Thanks for the review Lynn! We were at the original taping as well and got bummed when they didn’t do the dvd from it. Got to see it again this past year though and loved it. A great program with lots of fun. I have to agree with you, probably my favorite part is Ronnie reading the Bible. Love it!

I have that DVD, and I completely agree with you! Of course, when you start with these three groups, there is not much that can go wrong. They are the consummate professionals, with excellent harmonies and a great sense of balance that allows fun to come in at just the right times and in the right amount so the program does not become irreverent. I LOVE Greater Vision and could listen to an entire two hours of only them, but the friendship that these three groups have together is just wonderful to see, and it speaks well of a true Christian testimony. This DVD would be a wonderful purchase for oneself or for a gift! Thank you for your review; I’m happy that we agree! 🙂

Hey Charity! I was also disappointed that they didn’t use the video footage from Branson, but if the quality was the same as Jubilee 3 (DVD) I’m glad they re-taped it. That’s wonderful you were able to see the tour this year too! We were not able to make it to any of dates on the Christmas tour but we did see a little bit of the program when we went to L5’s New Years Eve Celebration and enjoyed it very much! Thank you for stopping by! It was great hearing from you!

    God Bless,
    Lynn

Hello Glenda! Yes! I agree with everything you wrote! When GV, L5 and the BB’s stand on stage as Jubilee they’re a beautiful picture of the body of Christ…everyone has their place and no one tries to outshine the other. As you mentioned, they have a wonderful testimony!…and a great sense of humor! 🙂 I’m so glad you stopped by and shared your thoughts with us!

    Blessings,
    Lynn
