Faith, Facts and Fairytales – What Are The Chances?

Categories: Study,The Latest

Christianity says faith…
The world says fairytale…
But what do the facts say?????

The Bible teaches that this world was created by God – Evolution teaches that the world evolved by chance.  The thing is, only one of those views can be true.  Two opposing arguments can’t both be correct at the same time!  I would like to use this post to expose some arguments for the theory of “chance.”  What are the chances of the world forming over billions of years, in which intelligent life randomly appeared and developed into the complex world we live in today?  Well, lets find out!

ocean

What are the chances of our oceans remaining liquid?
It sounds like a silly question, doesn’t it?  Yet, it causes a great deal of grief for Evolution and the Big Bang Theory.  Listen to this… “If the Earth were five percent closer to the Sun, the Earth’s oceans would boil, and the same greenhouse effect that creates 900 degree Fahrenheit temperatures on Venus would be realized on the Earth.  If the Earth were ten percent further away from the Sun, the oceans would freeze.  So not only must a planet have an abundance of water to sustain life, but that same planet must orbit a star at just the right distance to maintain water in a liquid state.”  If the Big Bang Theory is true, what are the chances that after the explosion (of the Big Bang) that the Earth would find itself in just the right distance from the Sun so our oceans wouldn’t freeze or boil, but remain liquid?  What are the chances of that?  Or, was there an Intelligent Creator behind it all, who knew exactly where to place the Earth?

venus

What are the chances of Venus’ rotation?
There is a law in science called the Conservation of Angular Momentum.  This law basically says that if an object is spinning counter-clockwise and something breaks off that object, the piece that broke off will continue to spin counter-clockwise.  This creates a problem for the Big Bang Theory because Venus, Uranus and possibly Pluto rotate backwards from the other six planets!  “All the planets of the Solar System orbit the Sun in a counter-clockwise direction as viewed from above the Sun’s north pole. Most planets also rotate on their axis in a counter-clockwise direction, but Venus rotates clockwise (called “retrograde” rotation).”  If the Big Bang Theory were true, all the planets should rotate in the same direction.  What are the chances that Venus and Uranus don’t?  Maybe the solar system had a Maker, One who made it that way on purpose?

What are the chances of life without water?
We all know that in order to live we need drinking water, but what about the oceans, rivers and lakes?  Do they count?  According to waterpotAnswers Magazine (Jan-March 2013 issue), water saves life in more ways than one.  “Water has a relatively high heat capacity.  Heat capacity refers to the amount of heat it takes to change something’s temperature.  Compared to most other things we cook, a pot of water on the stove takes a long time before the water feels any warmer, even on high.  Why?  In order to get the pot of water any hotter, it must absorb a lot of heat.  The same is true in the reverse.  The higher the heat capacity, the longer it takes to make the material colder.  This is why a carton of cream will cool off in the refrigerator faster than a bottle of water.  The cream has a lower heat capacity than water…Why is it so important for water’s heat capacity to be high?  Because it protects the life on this planet from certain death.  Unlike other planets in the solar system, the earth experiences little difference in the temperature between night and day.  At nightfall, the temperature typically drops around 20-30 degrees.  On Mars, temperatures can swing 180 F in a single day.  While much of this is due to its thin atmosphere, another factor is the lack of water on Mars…The oceans, rivers and lakes help regulate the temperature on the earth.  They can hold onto and release large amounts of heat without significantly changing temperature themselves.  Large bodies of water moderate the effects of a heat wave or a cold snap, so that the effects aren’t too drastic.”  If Evolution is true, what are the chances that Earth would have enough water to regulate the temperature?  Doesn’t this information point to an Almighty God who knew what the Earth would need and supplied it?

What are the chances?
With this information in mind, what are the chances of anyone convincing a Christian that we live in a world that’s billions of years old?  Why would we need to fit “ages” with long periods of time in between the six days of Genesis one?  How come we have so many young people leaving the church, going to college and being taught that there is no God – and doubting the Bible?  In 2008, 76% of the United States of America considered themselves “Christian.”  That’s a pretty good percentage!  So why has Evolution not been contested, fought and countered?  Maybe it’s because the ones who call themselves Christians don’t really believe what’s in the Word of God enough to defend what it says.  I think that’s sad.  Too many churches and Christians are trying to find a way to combine what the world teaches with what the Bible teaches.  That’s when we end up with the Gap Theory and the Day Age Theory – because we don’t feel like we can go up against the billions of years.  The problem is, what we end up with is a theory that doesn’t match up with the Scripture and it doesn’t match up with what Science has discovered about the world we live in.  I sincerely hope that this little series will help us (Believers and non-believers alike) see that.  I pray these facts will strengthen your faith!
