The Latest

writerHave you ever noticed how photos portray writers?  Nine chances out of ten the photo had him (or her!) seated on a nice cushy chair, pen in hand, expensive looking leather bound notebook sitting on their lap with a gaze directed out a window lost in thought.  Oh, and don’t forget a coffee mug on the table next to them!  There’s always a coffee mug!  Well, that picture almost describes this writer as I sit here typing my April newsletter, Land of the Lakes and Sun, that will be posted April 1st.   My computer replaces the “leather notebook” and though there is a coffee mug sitting on the end table next to my favorite swivel rocker, it is filled with water instead of coffee.  Disappointing, huh?  Sometimes the way the world portrays things can be a bit of an exaggeration of reality, though some similarities remain the same.  On the other hand, it is no exaggeration to say that my calendar for April is considerably full.  Concerts, Gospel sings, traveling…let’s just say that there will be a lot to write about, regardless of the setting!

First off, this weekend (April 3rd-5th) we will be at the Lake of the Ozarks Gospel Sing in Osage Beach, Missouri.  I fell in love with the setting when we attended for the first time last year – and it’s not too far from home!  There are outlets if you like to shop and greatlakeoftheozarks places to eat, but what I enjoyed most (outside of the singing) was the atmosphere the lakes and state park give to the area.  It’s a beautiful place to visit!  This year the sing will be having the Booth Brothers, The Mark Trammell Quartet, The Lester’s, Karen Peck and New River and Triumphant Quartet.  So we are going to hear some GREAT singing!

On April 11th we will drive back up to the Meramec Music Theater in Steeleville, Missouri for an evening with Brian Free and Assurance.  We’ve already been up in Steeleville for a concert with the Whisnants in March (review coming soon!) and had a great time.  Concert promoter Rosella Roberts does an excellent job selecting artists for this concert series!

Then we are off to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina for Abraham Productions’ Singing in the Sun – April 21st-26th.  This was another sing we fell in love with after going for the first time last year.  We look forward to hearing some great artists like Ivan Parker, The MacKameys, The Whisnants, The Mark Trammell Quartet, Brian Free and Assurance, The Booth Brothers, Bowlings and a whole lot more!   And of course, a nice walk on the beach!  *wink*

Whew!  That’s a lot of miles!  We will be busy, it’s true, but I also plan on having some posts for April besides concert reviews.  Once again, we will have our monthly give-a-way up this Friday.  I’m not going to say whose CD will be up for grabs but…if you like hymns and family harmony…you should come by and check it out!  😉  Brian Free and Assurance released a great project this year titled Unashamed – and I hope to have my review of that up this month as well!  Now, for the book worms out there – I had the pleasure of reading an excellent book called Music in the Air written by Mark Ward, Sr.  This volume has been sitting on my shelf for quite a while and so I finally decided to pick it up and read it.  All I will say for now is, I learned so much about radio and how quartets operated back when this “industry” began!

I hope everyone has a blessed spring and a Happy Easter!

Good job Lynn. By the way Steelville is spelled without that extra e. That is how Illinois spells Steelville.
